A complete refurbishment of the Metropolitan Police Forensics Laboratory and SO19 offices at 109 Lambeth, Old Paradise Street, SE1 7LP was completed in 2016. SCI worked with Mace to deliver this significant project.
The total build costs for the Mace project were over £60million. SCI were responsible for the BMS fit-out of the laboratory, restaurant and office areas, securing a 2 year contract worth £1,200,000.
Retrofit projects often bring their own challenges, and this project’s main challenge came early. With little detail available about the building’s 1960’s construction, it was stripped back to it’s core and scanned to create up to date drawings for the project team. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was then used to combine new drawings with the actual building structure.
The building needed to remain fully operational throughout the project, so phased works were managed effectively. Phase 1 works included new plant installation, addition of laboratory and forensics facilities on floors 4 and 5. SCI designed and installed the BMS using Trend controllers to manage CHW (Chilled Water), HWS (Hot Water Services) and Air Handing Units (AHU). Building Automation and Control (BAC) BACnet was used to manage the fourth and fifth floor control panels communication to VAV and IQ controllers.
The Metropolitan Police Forensics Laboratory building now provides flexible working space for up to 1800 staff for multiple investigative, forensic, and counter terrorism specialist teams.
